Smart card and digital signature

Murgia Sviluppo Spa is specialized in Smart Card and Digital Signature registration.

The use of these two new technologies is a new important achievement necessary for the development and for the growth of enterprises in the Murgia’s area. The company has activated a service for the release of Smart Cards after the agreement with Infocamere, the IT services cooperative company of the Italian Chamber of Commerce.

Smart card and digital signature

What a Smart Card is about, can be understood in terms of its ability of allowing user to benefit from the Digital Signature, that is the electronic equivalent of the traditional signature appended on a card.

A Smart Card is usually associated to an IT document which is enriched with information certifying with certainty:

  • The legal value (the electronic document digitally signed has the same legal value of a paper document which is manually signed unless there is a legal action against falsity);
  • The integrity (securing that the document has not been tampered after signature);
  • Authenticity (securing the identity of who is signing or has signed the document);
  • Non-repudiation (securing that the signatory would not deny the document signed by himself/herself).

The Digital Signature can offer these guarantees as it is based on the usage of an asymmetrical key cipher system: the private key - being in the Smart Card’s chip - is needed for signing the document; the public key - entered in the digital certificate - is needed to verify the appended signature.

All this is possible thanks to the Smart Card having the same size of a credit card and being defined as an "intelligent card" for a microchip hedging in the private key as well as the user digital certificate.

Moreover, the digital certificate is a file containing the user public key which is digitally signed by the agency certifying the document after having ascertained the user identification. The certificate, necessary to sign digitally a document, is called the Signing Certificate.

Murgia Sviluppo SpA has become a Registration Office on the basis of the agreement with Infocamere: it has also the role of ascertaining the user identity and the data registration which are necessary to create the digital certificate.

Murgia Sviluppo has released its first Smart Cards for the benefit of enterprises. The use of the digital sign is necessary for several services starting from the transmission of legal subjects budgets. The transmission in digital format has become legally binding from the year 2003.

You can find the Registration Office of Murgia Sviluppo in the legal and operative headquarter located in the Industrial Area of Altamura, via del Mandorlo at the corner with via del Fragno (tel. +39 080 310 62 56; fax +39 080 316 05 81; email:murgiasviluppo@murgiaimpresa.it).
